Announcement

  • Trans Awareness Week at York U. The Centre for Sexual Violence Response, Support & Education and Student Counselling & Development (SCD) will be hosting Trans Awareness Week at York U from November 16 to 20 in support of our Trans, Queer and Gender Non-Conforming community. The Centre and SCD will be hosting events and workshops throughout the week. Keep checking the webpage for updates as we get closer to the date.

  • Transgender Day of Remembrance Virtual Event: Join the Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Inclusion for a free, virtual event featuring the perspectives of incredible Trans and allied community members. Transgender Day of Remembrance has been observed annually as a day to memorialize those who have been murdered as a result of transphobia. This event is open to all faculty, staff and students in the York Community. Friday, November 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration required.

  • A Message from President Lenton on the Appointment of Maureen Armstrong as Ombudsperson: “President Rhonda Lenton has announced the appointment of Maureen Armstrong as the University’s new Ombudsperson. The University Ombudsperson provides an impartial and confidential service to York students, faculty and staff who have been unable to resolve their concerns about the application of York University policies, procedures and or practices.” Read the full announcement.

  • Markham Centre Campus (MCC) Virtual Town Hall. Join President Lenton and other York senior leaders in this Virtual Town Hall and learn about the latest updates on our plans for the MCC. This town hall will also give students an opportunity to ask questions about the University’s plans.   • Experiential Learning Opportunity: UNHack: Design Solutions, Impact Lives. Calling all aspiring changemakers! No matter what you are studying, join other students for this hands-on experiential learning opportunity to solve United Nations' Sustainability Goals. The three-day event will feature workshops, networking opportunities and inspiring keynote presentations. Friday, November 20 to Sunday, November 22. Registration required.

  • Leadership Workshop: Creative Leadership & Fostering IndividualityAttend this workshop and learn strategies around collaborating with others. Your experience and personality are vital to your role as a leader. Embrace that!   • Student Community Forum on Student Organization Regulation (Presidential Regulation 4) York has many opportunities for involvement through student government and clubs that provide activities, services, advocacy and representation to enrich the diversity and quality of life of all students. The Vice-Provost Students is hosting this student community forum about the purpose and process of revising Presidential Regulation 4. This is an opportunity for you to provide suggestions and have your questions answered by members of the Division of Students team. Thursday, November 19, 2 to 3 p.m.

  • SCLD Game NightsUnwind, take a break from schoolwork and meet new people by dropping into Student Community & Leadership Development's weekly game nights! They'll be offering a variety of games such as Among us, Scribbl.io and Jackbox games. These game nights will be led by students on the Student Engagement Ambassador Team.   • York U Alumni Celebration: Honouring 20 Years of Bryden Awards. The Bryden Alumni Awards celebrate alumni who have changed the world for the better. This year’s virtual event which will bring 20 years of award winners together with York’s global community of alumni, friends, students and York leaders for an entertaining and inspiring evening.   • Health Education Workshop: Self-Care Series: Cultivating Self-Compassion for Perfectionist Tendencies. Join this workshop hosted by Health Education and learn how to address negative beliefs and thoughts through self-compassion activities and explore how self-kindness and mindfulness can help you overcome setbacks as well as re-frame new approaches to goal setting and stress reduction. Tuesday, November 17, 3 to 4:30 p.m. Registration required.

  • Workshop: Virtual Mental Health 101. This workshop will provide you with ways to support your peers with mental health concerns as well as provide a safe online space for discussion and education about self-care practices, healthy boundaries and more. Wednesday, November 18, 10 to 11:30 p.m. Registration required.

  • Workshop: Sleep for Better Grades. Did you know that York students reported “sleep difficulties” as their third top academic stressor? Join the Peer Health Educators and learn some science-backed tips that can help you get your sleep back on track and improve your sleep hygiene to support better grades and academic success. Thursday, November 19, 11 a.m. to noon. Registration required.

  • International Panel on Antimicrobial Resistance Threat to Global Health. To mark the start of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, and to celebrate this new collaboration, York University and the WHO are presenting a Q&A panel with three international experts on antimicrobial resistance. The event will also include opening remarks from Dr. Theresa Tam, Chief Public Health Officer of Canada. Wednesday, November 18, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

  • Race & Privilege: An Honest, Overdue Conversation with Ourselves. Join the York community in this interactive session hosted by Student Community & Leadership Development, where participants will utilize a conversational toolkit, wildcards and a series of dialogue-based questions that will help to empower difficult conversations around race and privilege with one another, but most importantly with ourselves. It is an instant chat tool with Zoom integration for screen-sharing option and is available Monday to Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. Outside these hours, you can always check out the Learning Commons website for more information.   • The President's Creative Writing Awards. Get writing! The Creative Writing Department, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies and The Office of the President are looking for original pieces in the following genres: poetry, short fiction, screenplay and stage-play. Open to all undergraduate students. Best entry for each genre gets $400! Submission deadline: Monday, January 18, 2021.

  • Writing Centre One-to-One and Drop-in Appointments. The Writing Centre invites you to bring any writing related to academics and book a 50-minute one-to-one appointment with a writing expert. They’re open Mondays to Fridays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Not enough time for a full appointment?   • York Cares United Way Campaign: GetUP for Community Virtual Challenge. We're encouraging the York Community to GetUP and get active from now until Sunday, November 22 to support people and families experiencing poverty, including those who have been impacted by the pandemic.
