Important Dates

    • Drop deadline: Last date to drop a Fall (Term F) course without receiving a grade is Friday, November 6.
    • Apply to Graduate: The deadline to apply to graduate in absentia in February 2021 is Friday, November 6.

Academics

  • Experience Grad Studies. The Faculty of Graduate Studies invites you to Experience Grad Studies, a three-day virtual event this week. This year’s virtual event features a series of information sessions and a Virtual Fair, which is your opportunity to engage with Graduate Program and Graduate Diploma representatives.   • Virtual Volunteer Fair. Want to give back to the community? Find opportunities to build career-related skills and gain experience while making a contribution to the work of a non-profit or charitable organization at the Career Centre's annual Volunteer Fair. Get the link to register at Experience York using your Passport York account. Click on the red button on your welcome dashboard to register as well as for signing in on the day of the event! Thursday, November 5, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

  • Clubs Showcase: Golden Key International Honours Society. Join this fun bi-weekly hangout, where Student Community & Leadership Development collaborate with different clubs and connect with the wider York community through games, stories and ideas. This week’s selected club is the Golden Key International Honours Society at York University. Join the event and follow along with @StudentLifeYU to learn more about the club and future events. Tuesday, November 3, 1 to 2 p.m. Registration required.

  • Leadership Workshop: Principles for Effective Leadership. Are you interested in learning what makes an effective leader or want to be an effective student leader yourself? Join this workshop and learn about leadership principles most commonly seen as vital to success. Wednesday, November 4, 2 to 3 p.m. Registration required.

  • York Cares United Way Campaign: GetUP for Community Virtual Challenge. We're encouraging the York Community to GetUP and get active from November 9 to 22 to support people and families experiencing poverty, including those who have been impacted by the pandemic. All you have to do is GetUP and move your body for 280 minutes (that’s the number of frontline community agencies United Way supports across the GTA). Register under the “York University-York Cares” team or register your own team, just be sure to indicate that York University is your University and please include York University in the team name, so we can celebrate with you.

  • York University will broadcast a virtual Remembrance Day ceremony from Keele Campus on Wednesday, November 11. The event will include both live and pre-recorded elements honouring the men and women who were killed during the two world wars and other conflicts. Please note that this is virtual-only ceremony this year. Watch next week's This Week @ York for the link to join the ceremony.

Mature Student Support

  • Workshop: Citations 101. In this session, hosted by the Atkinson Centre for Mature and part-time Students (ACMAPS), you will learn popular forms of citations used at York and how to access specific resources that will be helpful for your academic journey. Wednesday, November 4, 11 a.m. to noon. Registration required.

  • Mature Student Event Schedule. Are you a mature student at York? Are you interested in meditation or attending a casual, drop-in café hour to meet other mature students or a mature student peer mentor? Check the schedule at the link above and attend any session you wish, via Zoom.

Learning Skills

  • Learning Skills Services WorkshopMastering Group WorkGroup assignments are an inevitable part of every student’s experience. Working collaboratively is a key skill not just for success at university, but also in the work world. This workshop is designed to help you and your classmates master the art of effective group work. Wednesday, November 4, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

  • Workshop: Exam Prep. Join this session and learn tips to effectively prepare for all types of exams, including multiple choice, short answer, calculations, essay-style and more. If you feel like you could use some help preparing for exams, whether it’s a midterm or a final, then this workshop is for you. Thursday, November 5, noon to 1 p.m. Registration required.

  • Workshop: Time Management. Attend this workshop and learn key strategies to improve your academic achievement and confidence. Learn practical, personalized approaches to managing your time. Friday, November 6, 10 to 11 a.m. Registration required.

Health & Wellness

  • Anti-Racism Workshop Series: Intervening on RacismThis highly interactive workshop from the Centre of Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion (CHREI) will involve asking attendees to design strategies and practice tools to intervene when encountering racial discrimination, harassment and microaggressions. Please note: CHREI strongly recommends that participants have familiarity with these concepts and have attended at least one of the previous Anti-Racism Workshops before attending this session. Wednesday, November 4, 1:30 to 3 p.m. Registration required.

  • Health Education Workshop: Virtual Mental Health 101. This workshop, hosted by Health Education, will provide you with ways to support your peers with mental health concerns. It will also provide a safe online space for discussion and education about self-care practices, healthy boundaries and more. Thursday, November 5, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration required.

  • Workshop: Party @ Home: Drugs & Alcohol Safety (Halloween Special)Join this workshop to review some great ideas for how to virtually party this year. They will also review safety planning and harm-reduction strategies where drugs and alcohol might be present, whether you are partying solo or with your roommates. Thursday, November 5, 4 to 5:30 p.m. Registration required.

  • Workshop: Nutrition Basics: Debunking Fad Diets & Popular Food Trends. Join the Peer Health Educators as they reintroduce the basic building blocks of nutrition, provide tips to better understand food labels and how to make empowering choices when it comes to healthier eating on a student budget. Thursday, November 5, 4 to 5:30 p.m.   

  • Workshop: Sleep for Better Grades. Join the Peer Health Educators and learn some science-backed tips that can help you get your sleep back on track and improve your sleep hygiene to support better grades and academic success. Bonus: attendees will be included in a draw for a $10 to $25 gift certificate! Monday, November 9, noon to 1 p.m. Registration required.

  • Trans Awareness Week at York U. The Centre for Sexual Violence Response, Support & Education, and Student Counselling & Development (SCD) will be hosting Trans Awareness Week at York U from November 16 to 20 in support of our Trans, Queer and Gender Non-Conforming Community. The Centre and SCD will be hosting events and workshops throughout the week - keep checking the webpage for updates as we get closer to the date.

  • Drop by the new virtual Learning Commons Welcome Desk at the top right of the Learning Commons website! It is an instant chat tool with Zoom integration for screen-sharing option and is available Monday to Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. Outside these hours, you can always check out the Learning Commons website for more information. The web site also now offers a Learning Commons FAQ page to answer popular questions for those who prefer anytime support. This service helps you navigate academic supports and resources on campus available via the Learning Commons and is a convenient first check-in point with friendly and well-informed Learning Skills Services peers. The peers can provide direct assistance with a host of learning skills-related queries and can help you connect with the best resource or service you need, including library research, writing, career and English language support. 

  • View the York International Events Calendar for the full Virtual Coffee Break weekly schedule. YI’s daily Virtual Coffee Breaks are an online space for international and domestic students from across programs, Faculties, countries and cultures to connect and get to know each other! Student Leaders are on Zoom every weekday with different fun and interesting topics. When you sign up, a confirmation email with the zoom link will be sent to you upon registration.

  • Writing Centre One-to-One and Drop-in Appointments. The Writing Centre invites you to bring any writing related to academics and book a 50-minute one-to-one appointment with a writing expert. They’re open Mondays to Fridays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Not enough time for a full appointment? Then join for a 15-minute appointment with drop-in support to have a question answered. We’re always happy to help.
