Announcement

  • A statement from York University President Rhonda Lenton on first anniversary of Flight 752 tragedy. "York is one of many Canadian education institutions that suffered losses on the flight, which claimed the lives of all 176 people on board, including dozens of students, staff, faculty and alumni committed to higher education and to making a positive impact in their communities and around the world. To honor their memory, in February of last year, York established an Iranian Students Memorial Award, which will help support students who have been active in the Iranian community as they pursue higher education." Read the full statement here.

  • Update on June 2021 Convocation: “After careful consideration of the ongoing public health concerns resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, we have once again made the difficult decision to hold our June 2021 convocation ceremonies virtually, as opposed to in-person." Read the full message here.

  • Consent Talks with York International. York International (YI) is hosting a production from The Centre for Sexual Violence Response, Support & Education (The Centre) made in collaboration with Vanier College Productions called Consent Talks. The play is about sex and consent, looking at the university experience during the global COVID-19 pandemic. Some explored themes include virtual hookups, sexual violence, online harassment and the impact of social media and physical distancing rules. Support persons and representatives from The Centre will be in attendance for support. Wednesday, January 13, 9 a.m. Registration required.

International Connections

  • Drop-in International Student Advising. Drop in to speak with YI's immigration specialists who can help answer your quick questions regarding study permits, work permits, visas, SIN, quarantine and travel information, and more. Wednesday, January 13, 1 to 3:30 p.m. No appointment needed, but registration is required for the Zoom link.

YI’s daily Virtual Coffee Breaks are an online space for international and domestic students from across programs, Faculties, countries and cultures to connect and get to know each other! Student Leaders are on Zoom every weekday with different fun and interesting topics. When you sign up, a confirmation email with the zoom link will be sent to you upon registration.

Connect with Community

  • Community Forum on Sustainability Development Goals. The President's Sustainability Council in partnership with the Office of the Provost is pleased to invite you to attend the first Community Forum on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In the Summer of 2020, we adopted a new University Academic Plan (UAP) 2020-2025 Building a Better Future. The new UAP includes a University-Wide Challenge to contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and this meeting is intended as an initial opportunity for discussion and engagement. Wednesday, January 13, 1 to 2:30 p.m. Registration required.

  • Nellie Library Welcome Back Café. Everyone is welcome to join the first Nellie Library Welcome Back Café of the term. This first café will be an opportunity for new and returning students, staff and faculty to connect virtually over a cup of their favourite beverage. We want to welcome everyone’s return after our first extended holiday break during the pandemic.   • ElleHacks 2021. Take part in the largest hackathon created for women and non-binary individuals of all experience levels! ElleHacks is an event led entirely by students with a background in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. The event challenges participants from different technical and creative disciplines to collaborate, learn, compete and show off their skills to solve real-life problems in an inclusive and safe space. Friday, January 15, 5 p.m. to Sunday, January 17, 5:30 p.m. Registration required.

  • The President's Creative Writing Awards. Get writing! The Creative Writing Department, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies and The Office of the President are looking for original pieces in the following genres: poetry, short fiction, screenplay and stage-play. Open to all undergraduate students, you can submit work to more than one category, but may only submit one work per genre. Best entry for each genre gets $400! Submission deadline: Monday, January 18, 2021.

  • Celebrate other students at the annual Experiential Education (EE) Symposium, which showcases experiential education at York and celebrates the achievements of students who have participated in EE. This year’s virtual event will consist of opening remarks from President and York staff, a student/faculty panel presentation and students presenting their projects in the form of posters.   • Preparing for Career Fair Success: Resumé & Cover Letter Writing. Attend this webinar and find out how to effectively target your resumé and cover letter. Present your experiences, education and skills in a way that showcases your assets and piques employers' interest in you. Monday, January 18, 10 a.m. to noon. Registration required on Experience York.

  • Sign up for next week’s Winter 2021 Virtual Career Fair! Meet employers who are looking to hire York students for a variety of opportunities, including part-time, summer, internship and full-time positions after graduation. Participate in the Career Advising virtual session hosted on Zoom where our career professionals and career peer educators will be available to talk to you one-on-one. You can access the Zoom link from the Career Centre's welcome booth webcast or simply drop into a private chat and we’ll be happy to share the link! Thursday, January 21, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration required on Experience York.
