Announcement

  • UIT Announcement: There will be two upcoming network maintenance disruptions as UIT upgrades the data centre network. The maintenance will occur from 6 to 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 11 and between 10 p.m. on Friday, March 12 to 8.30 a.m. on Saturday, March 13. This maintenance will enhance performance and reliability to many systems and applications at York. During this maintenance period, there will be intermittent outages that could last up to 60 minutes to many services, including major University applications such as the University's main website and eClass.

  • The Student Senator Caucus (SSC) is now accepting nominations for graduate/professional student nominees, from full-time graduate students who are eligible two maintain their full-time status for the duration of the two-year appointment. Visit the website above for information about student nominee to the Board of Governors. Nomination Deadline: Monday, March 8, 9 a.m. Late or incomplete forms will not be accepted.

Connect with Community

  • The University Academic Plan and the Pandemic: Challenges & Opportunities for the Teaching and Research Priorities. You're invited to attend the first of two planning sessions centred on the 2020-2025 University Academic Plan (UAP). This session will focus on how we can best support the UAP teaching priorities in view of the seismic events of 2020-2021 and the actions needed over the next one to two years to keep our academic mission on track to purposefully shape the post-pandemic future of the University. Registration Deadline: Monday, March 8.

  • Shades of Our Sisters Digital Exhibit Opening and Film Screening. Join The Centre for Sexual Violence, Response & Education (The Centre) on International Women’s Day for the opening of the Shades of Our Sisters Digital Exhibit and Film Screening. Shades of Our Sisters is an exhibit which includes the stories of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Trans and Two Spirit People as told by their families. The exhibit exists with the purpose of honouring MMIWGT2S and giving Families space to celebrate the lives of their loved ones. Monday, March 8, noon to 1:30. Registration required.

Mature Student Support

  • Mature Student Workshop: Learning to Learn Remotely for Mature Students with Families. Join this workshop and learn more about effective strategies for studying and completing coursework remotely. You'll also get the chance to discuss strategies around how to balance school and family responsibilities. Wednesday, March 3, 11 a.m. to noon. Registration required.

  • Mature Student Event Schedule. Are you a mature student at York? Are you interested in meditation or attending a casual, drop-in café hour to meet other mature students or a mature student peer mentor? Check the schedule at the link above and attend any session you wish, via Zoom. 

International Connections

  • York International (YI) Information Session: Pathways to Permanent Residence. If you are interested in applying for permanent residence, join YI for this virtual presentation to find out about the various options you may have. Lawyers from Green and Spiegel will be presenting and answering questions. Thursday, March 4, 1 to 3 p.m. Registration required.

  • YI’s International Student Bursary is now accepting applications. This Bursary is available for international students who are experiencing unexpected or emergency financial need due to unforeseen circumstances. It is intended to cover small costs directly related to the student’s academic success. Visit the link for more information, including eligibility requirements. Application Deadline: Sunday, March 14.

  • View the York International Events Calendar for the full Virtual Coffee Break weekly schedule. YI’s daily Virtual Coffee Breaks are an online space for international and domestic students from across programs, Faculties, countries and cultures to connect and get to know each other! Student Leaders are on Zoom every weekday with different fun and interesting topics. When you sign up, a confirmation email with the zoom link will be sent to you upon registration.

Academics

  • Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellowships for Black & Indigenous Scholars at York University. York is excited to launch a new Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for Black and Indigenous Scholars, as part of the commitment to promoting justice and embracing a variety of scholarly perspectives, backgrounds and lived experiences. The program will offer emerging scholars from a wide range of disciplines access to the financial support, mentorship and career development opportunities needed to build the foundation for a successful professional future. Value: Up to four fellowships of min. $70,000/year in 2021–22. Application Deadline: Thursday, April 1.

  • Road to Research Success: How to Find Scholarly Articles and Books Through York Libraries. Need help navigating your way to academic sources? This workshop will provide you with a basic roadmap to library resources – and put you in the driver’s seat. Tuesday, March 9, 1 to 2:15 p.m. Registration required.

Money Matters

  • Student Financial Support Peers Workshops. Join the Student Financial Peers and learn some tips and strategies about finances at university. There are several workshops to choose from covering topics like financial literacy, budgeting, taxes, covering the cost of education and more. Whether you are an international or domestic student, finishing your first or final year of study, there is a workshop here for you.

Learning Skills

  • Writing Centre Workshop: Referencing in Style. Join this virtual workshop where you'll learn tips and strategies for how to reference and cite research sources using proper citation methods. Thursday, March 4, 1:30 to 3 p.m. Drop-Ins welcome!

  • Writing Centre One-To-One and Drop-in Appointments. The Writing Centre invites you to bring any academics-related writing to a 50-minute one-to-one appointment with a writing expert. They’re open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you don't have time for a full appointment, drop in for a 15-minute session to have a question answered. They’re always happy to help.

Entrepreneurship Support

  • YSpace Event: Founder Fundamentals - Legal Basics for Entrepreneurs. As you are dreaming up the next best idea, product or service, it is important to take a step back and to ensure that you build and secure the legal foundation of your business. Learn more about the legal steps you need to take when you are starting your own business in this session. Thursday, March 4, 6 to 8 p.m. Registration required.

  • The York Region Food & Beverage Accelerator. Apply for this five-month accelerator program that brings together the network, mentors and education needed to help scale Consumer Packaged Goods-based companies in the food and beverage industry. Application Deadline: Friday, March 5.

  • Entrepreneurial Alumni Speaker Series - Kickstart your Passion: Turn your Spark into a Business. In this International Women's Day Special Edition, YSpace is featuring Founder of Good Food for Good, Richa Gupta. Richa will share with you how she discovered her calling and how her successful venture allows her to live her purpose everyday. Monday, March 8, noon to 12:45 p.m. Registration required.

Worth Repeating

  • Duo Two-Factor Authentication: Student 2-FA activation will proceed in alphabetical order through the rest of the term. Once your account is activated, you will be prompted to follow the 2-FA setup process to enable 2-factor authentication at your next Passport York login. Setup is fast and easy, but if it is not a convenient time you can skip the setup step for up to 14 business days. If you have not completed the setup within that time, you will be required to complete it at your next Passport York login. Learn more about York's 2-FA Authentication.

  • Student Accessibility Services continues to meet with students virtually! Students already registered with Student Accessibility Services can connect with their Accessibility Counsellor by email or via sasinfo@yorku.ca.
